Historic San Juans

Project: WordPress website

San Juan County, Washington has historical societies on each of the main islands: San Juan, Orcas, and Lopez. The three groups decided to have a single website created, called Historic San Juans, where visitors could go to find out about upcoming events and learn more about the Societies. I had previously designed the website for the Lopez Island Historical Society, so I was very pleased when I was hired to create the joint museum website.

I built the website using WordPress so that it would be easy for the Museum staff to update their respective pages. Each museum has a page with a list of events, a photo gallery, and important links. I chose a suite of plugins to handle the events listing, photo galleries, and other site functions.

The home page contains a listing of events pulled from all of the individual museum pages. The list expands and collapses using a nice jQuery effect. The page also features a graphic that I created using maps developed by the San Juan County GIS Team, and I chose type and ornament that would express a “historic” feel for the site.
